What I Did for the Alzheimer's Association

For the first three or four years, I think I told myself I was volunteering for the North Florida Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association to bolster my college resumé. Between the photography and videography required to document their events, my work with them made great use of my preexisting skills and the skills that I was learning.

Soon after, I became a spokesperson for the Association, and I was filming, narrating and editing content to recruit more volunteers and inspire donors to get involved just like I had. I told myself I did it because I believed in the cause.

But it's become pretty clear to me that I did it all for my grandma, Pat, before I did it for anyone else. It's hard to accept that someone you love--and someone so close--could lose their memories to a disease like she did. So I told myself otherwise.

It probably didn't get me into college, and although I sure hope it inspired many others to similar action, I can't ever be sure. To me, though, it's some of the most meaningful work I've ever done. Here it is.
